Research Portfolio - Locations
It's important for a researcher to fully researcher the filming locations for a production, to ensure that all potential problems are under control. Here is the list of filming locations my documentary.
Location One: Bridgend – Wales (Tuesday 7th December 2010)
Bridgend is the town which in fewer than 2 years, 24 young people took their lives whilst taking part in a rumoured "cult suicide". We have chosen to use the town for the introduction to our documentary.
General information on the town;
Since ceasing being a mining town the population of Bridgend (39,000), has struggled to attract new industries to make money. The percentage of benefit claimants is the second highest in Wales, many of these registering disabled. Although the town has been rocked with a high number of teen suicides, this has always been a common feature in the town. As a coastal town with high unemployment rates, a high rate of suicide among young males is often expected. (The Times Online, 2008)
There are some positive features to the town; the headquarters of Lidl is based here, as well as Ford and Sony having manufacturing bases in the city. As you can see, there are very few reasons that one might come to Bridgend - and many to leave.
A really important factor to note is that there used to be five youth focus groups in Bridgend - places where teenagers could go for counselling and advice - but funding was withdrawn and now there is only the one. (The Telegraph, 2008)
Things to note for filming;
Bridgend is a suitable location to film a portion of our Documentary. It has a stereotypical feel of a down market British town which people will relate to. It is easy to access as shown later in the portfolio (Call Sheet) and there are places nearby to eat or stay overnight if need be. Due to Bridgend being coastal, precautions need to be taken against wind as it may affect sound quality. We will ensure that all the equipment we need is present on the day of the shoot. Other risks have been highlighted in the risk assessment further along in the portfolio.
Location Two; Notting Hill, London (Tuesday 7th December 2010)
Notting Hill is the home of our contributor Cassie, we plan to go here for an interview in Cassie's home about her experience of Seven Days and the effect Twitter and Chat Nav have had on her life.
General information on the town;
Notting Hill, the trendy corner of west London that's famously unrepresentative of anything, aside from the inherited wealth and boho sensibilities of the nauseatingly self-satisfied people who live there. (The Telegraph) 23rd September 2010
Notting Hill is a vibrant and diverse area in London which attracts many visitors each year due to the Notting Hill Carnival. A recent channel 4 documentary "Seven Days" follows he lives of ordinary people living in Notting Hill.
Things to note for filming;
Details of the time we will meet her are featured on the Call sheet Notting Hill is great for catering to the needs of the public with plenty to do highlighted on the www.mynottinghill.co.uk. There are no potential camera issues or problems.
Location Three, The Guardian Offices London (Tuesday 7th December 2010)
The Guardian newspaper has a new Headquarters in London's King's Cross. We will be visiting the premises in order to get in contact and film Tom Meltzer who is a journalist who has written many articles on the subject of social networking.
Things to note for filming;
This location is probably the safest of the 5 purely for the fact that it is inside and therefore there is no risk of extreme weather. There are lots of places to eat in Kings cross and as it in central London it won't be too hard to find.
Location Four; Southampton – Solent University (Wednesday 8th December 2010)
As two of our contributors now live in the city of Southampton, we will be filming here for shots of young adults and students in and around the university campus and Halls of residences. The city is a very beautiful place and will be great for reflection for the audience. These shots will mainly be atmospheric and will have voiceovers edited in to explain and describe the themes of the documentary.
Further to this we plan to interview the University on what they feel social networking does to the Universities community and how they can combat the depression of teens.
No directions or travelling times will be needed as we know the surrounding environment and where will be good to film. Plenty of places to eat and drink lie in Southampton.
